With the UK government setting the 2035 Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, car dealerships and manufacturers across the country are preparing for an electric future. As the EV market continues to surge, dealership group Mon Motors has already taken proactive steps at its brand-new Volvo dealership in Cardiff.

During the construction phase in 2024, we installed a range of AC charging stations designed for both customer and service team use. By installing the charge points during the build, our installation partner, Centregreat, was able to deliver a seamless setup with zero disruption, the ideal scenario, as the dealership had not yet opened. Installing EV charge points during construction not only made the process easier, but also demonstrated Mon Motors’ commitment to electrification ahead of the 2035 ZEV mandate.

Mon Motors chose to work with Compleo for the installation of EV chargers at the Cardiff site due to the strong, ongoing relationship between the two companies. Compleo has already supplied and installed charging solutions at several other Mon Motors dealerships, including locations in Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham, and Chepstow. With a proven track record and trusted partnership, it was an easy decision to bring Compleo on board once again.

A key factor in Mon Motors’ initial decision to work with Compleo was the advanced load management system integrated into the chargers. This smart functionality ensures that power is distributed evenly across all connected vehicles and allows for priority charging—ideal for scenarios where rapid turnaround is needed. This was especially important, as the chargers are used by both customers and the dealership’s own teams. Whether it’s ensuring test drive vehicles are ready to go, keeping service vehicles topped up during maintenance, or charging the electric parts van for deliveries within the dealership group, having a reliable and efficient charging system in place was essential.

For this new car dealership, Mon Motors took expert advice from the EV specialists at Compleo to future-proof the site as much as possible. As part of this forward-thinking strategy, Compleo’s DUO Fleet AC charge points were installed. This charger features smart Busbar technology, enabling seamless expansion of the EV charging infrastructure in the future as the electric vehicle range continues to grow.

In a typical EV charger installation, each unit requires a separate cable running back to the main power supply, often increasing complexity and cost. However, the DUO Fleet’s Busbar system allows additional chargers to be added by simply connecting them to an existing unit, significantly reducing installation time and disruption.

Thanks to this smart solution and early planning, Mon Motors can now expand their on-site charging infrastructure with minimal disruption to staff, customers, or daily operations.

Customers can now arrive on site with confidence, knowing that whether they are looking for a new vehicle or bringing their car in for a service, they’ll be able to charge while on site. Charging is activated easily by asking a member of the Mon Motors team to start the session using an RFID card.

This approach not only ensures a smooth experience for drivers but also gives the dealership valuable oversight. With RFID activation, the team can track who is using the chargers and which departments they belong to. This means they could, if they choose, allocate charging costs back to customers’ service bills when cars are plugged in post-service.
